_____________San Miguelites are offered the opportunity to visit all the
__________exotic lands and cities of the Orient during their stay. Many
__________tour locations are in the Republic of the Philippines itself,
__________with Manila and Baguio heading the list.
_____________Manila is about five hours from San Miguel by bus or four
__________hours by car. Manila offers voluminous bargains for the avid
__________shopper and touring as interesting as anywhere in the world. The
__________main points of interest are the Presidential Palace; Quezon City;
__________Santo Tomas University, the oldest in the world; the Chinese Ce-
__________metery; the old Spanish walled city, with its World War II battle
__________scars in evidence; the U.S. Memorial Cemetery, commemorating
__________Americans who lie in unmarked graves throughout the South Paci-
__________fic; Luneta Park, with its monument to Philippines’ national hero
__________Jose Rizal. under constant guard by the Philippines Armed Forces;
__________and churches dating back to the early Spanish era.
_____________Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines, is 5,000 feet
__________above sea level in the mountains of northern Luzon. Military per-
__________sonnel and dependents use the facilities of Camp John Hay, a rest
__________area operated by the U.S. Air Force. Shopping--notably for wood
__________or silver items is a favorite pastime. The cool climate requires
__________a sweater at night. Baguio also is a stopping-off place for trips
__________farther north, namely to the world famous 2,000-year-old rice
__________terraces.
_____________Other places to visit in the Philippines include: Corregidor,
__________site of bloody World War II action; Grande Island, located in
__________Subic Bay and the site of a Special Services recreation center;
__________the Southern islands, with its blend of Moro (Moslem) and native
__________Filipino cultures; Clark Air Base, a three-hour drive from San
__________Miguel.
