Hi School course Technical Electrical also worked part time at GE in Temp/Resistance lab Feb 46 Turned 18 hit the Navy Recruting Line before the draft got me! Flunked eye exam. Talked to the recuiting CPO headed me for USNR 15 March exam OK all set except as of 1 March needed permission slip. I was in Albany NY folks in Burlington VT, should have signed them myself! Had not learned to Lie, Cheat and Steal yet! 15 April headed for Bainbridge Boot Camp. Sat in Outgoing Unit till told to go to SepCenter Found I could be drafted if I didn't do 6 months. Knew alphabet and became file clerk. Found many HiSchool and YMCA friends there Sept took and passed Physical for regular Navy Wrote BUPERS for orders to ET School OK if 4 year enlistment Nov at Great Lakes, June at NRL - too many in class - every 6th guy delayed 2 weeks - me of course. Graduating in Nov - Personnel Officer called 7 of us to office. Five volunteers for CNO duty needed. I wanted to ride a tin can and take care of the radar. Best scuttlebut was overseas embassy duty. While 4 guys volunteered while I figured that there were few Embassies and many Destroyers. Another guy and I volunteered simutaneously. Told to pick a coin toss. Hadn't won one when playing 8 Ball. Made other guy call it. He lost. After checking in at OP-20G Main Navy. Went up Embassy Road to 3801 Nebraska Ave. 19 Nov 1947 Detailed to work in Electronics Shop, later R&D then more R&D when AFSA and then NSA were born. Stayed 5 years as "essential to Wide Band Receiver developement". Head to Guam in March '52 made CPO, Skaggs '55 - night college after work as Senior ET, Took exam for commission as I had my 10 years in. Headed for Sangley Point Philipines, commissioned Ensign, off to Abbreviated OCS and became Electronic Dep't Hd at Bremerhaven. As JG back to NSA R&D at Fort Meade for 3 years, to NSG HQ as (LT) G422 Electronic installations, '65 to USS Oxford for my year off Viet Nam. Passed over for LCDR - mercy assignment to NSG Comm Center Electronics Officer (Ensign billet), BuPer figured they were loosing to much experience, made LCDR (Temp), '67. Off to US RadSta Northwest Electronic dept head. NO BOQ there, stayed at Air Station 65 miles away. Family remained in Maryland where we owned a home and Kids in Univ Of Md. Got home weekends!
