Joseph R. Munn, CTR2 USN, 1967-1971 In 1967, I was attending Community College in upstate New York, and since I was also working too, was unable to obtain enough credits to graduate within the two years. I enrolled for a fifth semester, and was advised that my student deferment was being pulled. I went to the Navy recruiter, a Chief Gunner's Mate, and enlisted in December under the Cache program ( delayed active duty for four months). In April, 1968, I arrived at Great Lakes. It came time to fill out our "dream sheets", and talk to a personnelman about what we "wanted" to do in the Navy. Since my father had been WWII Navy, and had given me the idea to get on the biggest ship that the Navy had, I put down Aviation Maintenance Administrationman and Aviation Storekeeper, shooting for a carrier. The Personnelman said I should put down a couple of more choices, even though the aviation slots were "wide open" and it was almost a sure thing that I would get one of my first two choices. He suggested Communications Technician. I asked him what that was, as I had never heard of it. He said that it was a "glorified radioman". I did as he suggested, and you guessed it, I got my orders sending me to "R" branch "A" school at Pensacola. Ultimately I spent two years at San Miguel, and another year at Sabana Seca, made a lot of friends and saw parts of the world I never would have seen otherwise. Ironically, during my entire enlistment, I never set foot on a ship. Joe Munn CTR2
