Richard Holt, CTRCS USN Retired, 1954-1977 A lighter note and change of pace on the tales of how we got where we were. I had the good fortune to be selected for recruiting duty in 72, after the draft ended and the "All Volunteer" force was enacted. I attended ENRO (Enlisted Navy Recruiting Orientation) school in Bainbridge, Md. The dilapidated base where I once attended boot camp and endured hours of torture at the hands of a BMC named "Scrubber" Wright, was going to teach me how to entice youngsters to volunteer for MY Navy. How many times, when talking to a high school kid who didn't have a clue what he/she wanted, did the "spook" in me think "I wonder how they would do with this or that" and actually chose a few of the kids who went on to make a career with SecGru. I must also admit there were times when a drop dead young lady, who had their heart set on becoming a Photographers Mate or a Hospital Corpsman, would somehow be persuaded that life as a Communication Technician was the only way to go. Therefore, I think some of those Chiefs who benefited from having those young lovelies make their mid watches more consmetically enjoyable, owe me and other CT's who recruited them,a big thank you.
