Wayne L. Douglass, CTM2 USN, 1967-1977 After High School graduation I worked for a couple of years first for Admiral Corporation and then for a local paint manufacturer in Woodstock, Illinois. Woodstock where I was born and lived is about 35 miles west of Great Lakes. There was an acquaintance of mine who was a couple of years older than I was who joined the Navy and dog gone, after boot camp he went to school for the longest time in Great Lakes. I talked to him and he was going to be an ET and was in ET"A" school. About this time Uncle Sam was kind of wondering if was interested in going to Viet Nam so I went down to my local Navy Recruiter and signed up. Went in on the 120 day delay program. I was supposed to go downtown (Chicago) for my Physical on Jan 27, 1967 but about a week before the Navy called me and rescheduled for Feb 2 which gave me another week of freedom. (On Jan 26 & 27 of 1967 Chicago was hit with a 23 inch snow storm). I did pass my physical on Feb 2nd, went on Active Duty June 2nd and reported to Great Lakes for boot camp. In the course of my training they asked me what I wanted to do and I said I'd like to be an ET. That's when the e-6 grabbed nearby 3 ring binder, flipped to the page about Communication Technician Maintenance (which basically said nothing) and had me read it. My first (and only) question was where is the school? Oh he said you'd be going thru ET'A' school right here in Great Lakes. I said sure sign me up. During school, especially Crypto School in California I was with a buddy who was also a CTM. We were in a class of all RM's. Most of them were either TAD from a ship or enroute to a ship and they would always harass Stewart and I because "CT's" didn't get sea duty. Near the end of KG-14 Crypto school when our orders came in, I got the Oxford and my buddy Stew got the Jamestown. -- Wayne L.
