Moved into new air conditioned barracks adjacent to the EM Club where I also bar tended on off duty hrs. Went through Hurricane Inez. Stayed the whole two/three days in Communications Bunker on Port/Starboard watch duty. Could walk out the cement bunker exit to the edge and see water blowing parallel to ground and a telephone pole with transformer bent halfway over. Revisited Key West recently, now very commercialized, but could not get into the gated area by Bunker. Everything still there, but the EM club appeared to be used for storage now. Can view the compound best by visiting the Fort Zachary Armada Beach area—nice area! Enjoyed working with Cuban refugees in town, fishing, touring, and then we moved to Homestead, Florida. 8/2/2023 Full name William Bill Carter Arrival date at key west 2/72 Departure date from key west 7/77 Rate/rating (e.g. ctrsn) CTI2(NAC)/CTI1(NAC) Email address Kz5bcn@arrl.net Add email to the online roster - yes or no? Along with what ever I could beg, borrow or steal(comshaw) from the base. I was the only M brancher and all the other guys helped me setup the equipment., We were lead(?) by Capt Fennell USMC and Lt Schleicher USN.,Also there was a small group of Marines with us for a few months.,We were joined for a short period by Army techs or whatever they were, and reps from NSA to setup the dish antenna. ,As a final note, Chief Griffin kept us going with his southern humor. He retired after returning to Cheltenam, but was killed in a car accident enroute to this retirement home. Everyone chipped in and bought a seat for him at the Annapolis stadium. 3/13/2018 1.FullName: Michael E Mc Andrew 2.NickName: Mac 3.ArriveDate: February 1965 4.DepartDate: May 1966 5.RateRating: Cpl./Sgt. I loved having the opportunity to live in Key West at that time - when it was a quieter town with a lot of charm - way before the cruise ships found it! The old Detachment is, of course, no longer there. Last year (2002) I walked through the fancy neighborhood which once housed our quonset huts, trailer, and the small site with our 300 ft antenna tower. I remember some of the single folks living on coconuts near payday! We were given a couple of vans from NSGA Homestead - I traded one van in on a jeep (like the mail jeeps) which we would drive up the Keys in to pickup supplies in Homestead. Honestly, it was more the opportunity to get fast food that wasn't available in Key West (remember - late 70s!). We'd stop at Arthur Treachers to bring back "Lemon Luv" pies for the gang - is that crazy? A good number of the I branchers there flew missions - as well as our OIC - Bob Neal (who looked like Errol Flynn!). So I often got to mind the store while they were out. I left KW just as the Cuban boat people were arriving and they were being detained right across the street from the Det. In fact, some of the guys at the Det were issued sidearms in the event the detainees escaped. We had decent housing, good friends and a good life at the Navy Chapel - a nice tour. (Don't ask about the 3 day CPO Initiation at Homestead where I was the SOLE initiatee!!!!! Driving two drunk Chiefs up the Keys (normally 3+ hours became an 8+ hour journey!)
