Dennis E. Yates, CTT2 USN, 1965-1971 My story is like so many I have read. I enlisted after graduation from high school in 1965 on a kiddie cruise and in boot camp I scored at the top of my company on the code test and high on the others as well so my counselor suggested CT school. I asked what it was but he would only say it was classified. (sound familiar?) I have seen others say that they had to wait after school for their clearances to come through but I was sent to NAAS Kingsville Texas for 6 months to wait for my school and obtain my clearance. After that I reported to Corry Field in 1966 and graduated later that year. I reported to NAVCOMMSTA Adak in late 1966 and spent the next year working at zeto point. I was there when the new satellite antennas were installed. Shortly before I was transferred a year later I had a conversation with a guy I knew that was to be transferred at about the same time. His name was Rodney Duke. I went to Kamiseya and had one of the best years of my life and he went to the USS Pueblo and we all know what that meant. I have often thought about the fact that as far as BUPERS was concerned there was nothing to distinguish him from me so it was just the luck of the draw. I served in Kamiseya from 1967 to 1968. Great duty station. I served at NAVCOMMSTA Rota, Spain from 1969 to 1971 and turned down a healthy reenlistment bonus to try my luck at civilian life. Like many of you, I have often wondered what my life would have been like if I had decided to make it a career, but I retired in 2009 and I am now enjoying my 8 grandkids with another on the way.
