Michael Walker CTO3 1971-1975 i originally going to enlist and be a radarman. After I took the test and such, I asked the recruiter what I was qualified for. He said based on my score, whatever I wanted. I told him radar, but he started to suggest nuclear, as in submarines. I asked what that would entail and he said about two years of school and a six year commitment. Told him I wanted to see how the first four would go. Then he suggested language interpretation and painted a picture of school in Monterey and the type of duty stations and such. Said it was a six year commitment and i thought about it until I asked what languages. He said Russian and Vietnamese and I said naw. I continued looking at the possibilities and came across the CT rating. Was looking at the different branches when the CTO caught my eye. At 17, I wash't terrible mechanically or electrically inclined, I had passed on the 'I' branch and the thought of listening to morse code hours on end didn't really appeal to me. So I decided on the 'O' branch. Which was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. Attended both A and C schools in Pensacola and spent the rest of my tour at Rota, section 3, 72-75. Separated at Rota in August '75 as CTO3.
