Jim Tryon, CTT3 USN, 1964-1968 As a farmboy from Iowa, wanted to see the ocean and the world. Joined the Navy just as my draft notice was arriving. Went to bootcamp and on the day that we were to choose what we wanted to be when we grew up, still didn't have a clue. They suggested to me to become a CT. Said my chances of being on a ship would be slim. After all the drills we did on the USS Recruit semed like a plan. Entered CTR school and struggled all the way through basic barely meeting each weeks speed. My clearance hadn't arrived so got to practice the code until I reached graduating speed. Once the pressure was off, picked up my speed in no time and then got assigned to grading papers in the big room (where you heard your first ditty). Every two weeks a new group would arrive and the instructor would let me and another guy grading papers do a little show boating. Would crank it up to graduating speed and let us take code and the newbies listened. They were in awe. After grading papers for about 3 month got a visit from 2 men in black suits to do an interveiw to speed up the process. They clued in on my history real quick. Asked me if I had ever had sex with an animal. Now let me tell you that I didn't know you could do that, but maybe, just maybe morning chores could have been more fun. Finally got to advanced and was breezing through it when on my 14th week got orders to T branch. Completed that with ease and then order day arrived. 2 week class C school and off to Adak. Ouch. And then to Hawaii. Am proud to have been a CT. The best group of guys anywhere. Jim Tryon CTT3 1964-1968
