Joseph T. Miller CTI3/YN2 USN 1961-1968 I enlisted in the Navy at age eighteen in April 1961. During classification at Great Lakes, I stated that I wished to go to Navy journalist school. The interviewing petty officer said that I could not do that, since I did not know how to type. “What about Communications Technician?” he asked. “What was that?” I responded. He then told me it had to do with secrets and security of naval communications. I was hooked, with visions of cloak-and-dagger stuff. So, after boot camp I was posted to CTA school at Bainbridge, Maryland, where I was taught how to type(!) and work with personnel records. While there I qualified for language training, which resulted in my posting to the Army Language School at the Presidio of Monterey for a 75-week course in Chinese-Mandarin, during which time I attained CT3 rank. From there, in June 1963, I was sent to Taiwan to work with the NAVSECGRUDET at Shulinkou, 15 miles outside of Taipei. In 1964, I married a native Taiwanese who worked on base, thus losing my Top Secret Crypto clearance. Ended up as part of ship’s company on board the USS Ticonderoga (CVA-14) right at the time some of my NSG buddies were on board the USS Maddox (DD-731) in August 1964. For the remaining time in the Navy, until discharge in February 1968, I worked as a Yeoman Second Class.
