Henry H. “Hank” Hedden, CTR1 USN, 1961-1970 As a teenager, used to watch “Navy Log” on TV and was fascinated by the opening of the submarine making a “combat” surface, so it was submarines for me. Enlisted 2 months after graduating high school. Did well on all the tests at boot camp, including radio and sonar. Was guaranteed a school, so when classifier asked me what I wanted, I only had one choice: Sonarman. He checked my scores and said “great”, then he checked medical and said, Nope! My eyes weren’t good enough. Sonar was the scope back then. So he asked what else, I had no idea. He checked other scores and said “You did very well on the radio (Morse) test, how’d you like to be a Communication Technician”? I said “O.K.” Best thing that happened to me, six of the nine years spent overseas and even didn’t mind the 14 months in Vietnam with the CT Marines.
