Lawrence Halliwell, CTT2 USN, 1965 - 1968 I have enjoyed reading everyone's stories of entering into the CT family. This is my short story: In January 1965 at 17 I quit high school and enlisted in the Navy on a kiddie cruise. I remember my first morning at Great Lakes, in a huge hanger, 5AM, and being rudely awakened, thinking I have made a big mistake. I was in Company 11 and I do not believe we were awarded any flags either. I was the company mail petty officer. I also had taken 6 months of typing in my senior year which may have been factored in the decision making. I know I did well on my tests but how well escapes me. I remember the interview and being asked if I wanted to be a driver for an admiral. Now I may have been just 17 but I wasn't the dimmest bulb in the box so I replied: Wouldn't I need a driver's license to do that? The next thing I knew the CT's were decided for me. R branch and T branch school at Pensacola and off to Kamiseya, 18 years old, doing really important work. It was the highlight of my working life, nothing since has come close to it.
