This is the "tie cutting" ceremony at the end. The officer welding the scissors is Cdr. (later Capt.) Robert Andreen. He was the acting CO on Guam when I made Chief. He was also my 1st SecGru CO when I went through R Branch training at IB in 1957. I thought it was kind of neat that he did the honors at my initiation. The softball field at NavCommSta Guam was (and hopefully still is) named after him. I hit the 1st home run out of the park during the Chiefs/Officers game that dedicated the park. He was playing 1st base for the Officers team, and I got a handshake from him as I rounded the bases. The man was quite an athlete, and played rings around many of the younger Officers. |
