William J. Carter, CWO3 USN Retired, 1965-1992 Out of high school, I enlisted in the reserves 14 Sept 1965. I had high GCT/ARI scores so BMC Ruben Briones called me in and said they had an open billet for a CT. I asked what they did in the Navy and he informed me that this information was classified. I replied "you must be crazy if you think I'm signing up for a job when you won't even tell me what I'll be doing"! He just looked at me and told me to get lost. A few days later I received orders for two weeks ACDUTRA on the USS English DD696 inport, Mayport, Florida. I got to the ship and spent the next two weeks on my hands and knees chipping rust and painting. When I returned to the reserve center the Chief called me in and said the CT job was still open and if I didn't take it that when I went on my two years active duty I would be doing the same job I'd on the English for the whole time! I asked if the CT job had anything to do with disarming explosives. He said no, that it had something to do with communications. I said I'd take the job. That's how I ended up as a CT. Later on, when I became a Chief, it dawned on me that Chief Briones undoubtably called the leading Chief on the English and told him that he was sending a smart-a$$ kid to him and to keep him busy the whole time chipping and painting!
