NTC SAN DIEGO. OCT 1955. SR. Asked for CT. Knew how to type. Passed a 
basic Morse test. At graduation I was put in a van, driven to IB CT School.

NRRF IMPERIAL BEACH. JAN 1956 – AUG 1956. CTRSA - CTRSN. Some Classmates: 
Tommy J. Morgan, McAdams, Howell, Manning, Christian, Virgin, Ben Truitt. 
LCDR Andreen was SECGRU DEPT HD. LCDR Adams was CO. CTRC Bennie Summerlin 
was senior Instructor.

MARCH AFB (NON-Morse). AUG 1956 – NOV 1956. CTRSN. Honor graduate. 
Roomed with Tommy J. Morgan. Some other Classmates: Webb, Devreis, Bullock, McAdams.

NAVCOMMSTA GUAM. NOV 1956 – MAY 1958. CTRSN – CTR2. Chased ditties in Section 4. 
Section boss was CTR2 Ron Yanik. Roomed with CTR3 Duckworth, best Morse (speed key) 
operator in SECGRU. Chief Bennie Summerlin was there as Head of Training. 
Other shipmates: Hurst, Lew Jacobson, Olson, Zerface, White, Bullock, Eilers, Fitzmorris. 
Some of the officers were CWO Tremblay (RULING), Ensigns Van McCabe and George Jackson. 
Soviets launched Sputnik in 1957.

KARAMURSEL (TUSLOG DET 28). 1958 – 1960. CTR2 – CTT1. Assigned to growing Non-Morse OPS. 
Reclassified to CTT. Shipmates, Chief Kenworthy, Chief Vidal (Bill) (Candy) Candelaria, 
Raoul Finnemore, Ken Morin, my brother Larry Lopez, Peter Argeroplos, Sagasser, Mike Spare.
CO was CAPT Griffin Chiles. Some of the other officers, CDR Cook, LCDRs Capozzalo and 
F.A.E Micara, LT Barber. In 1960 Turkish Prime Minister Adnan Menderes was overthrown 
by a military junta. Martial Law. Soviets shot down U-2 (Gary Powers) Spy Plane.

NAVCOMMSTA, SAN MIGUEL. 1960 – 1962. CTT1. Worked for Chief Breland. My brother 
Larry, CTR1, was there in P&R. CTO2 Lew Jacobson in the screen room. CDR Nelson Craw 
was SECGRU DEPT HD. Early transfer to NSGA Key West in 1962 for Spanish Language duty.

NSGA KEY WEST. 1962 -1964. CTT1 – CTIC. Cuban Crisis. Worked ashore at NSGA and in 
VQ-2 EC-121. Reclassified to CTI. Promoted to CTIC in 1964 with Hank Haggard, CTIC, 
and Bill Lockert, CTOC. Bill Candelaria, Dick Armijo, Dick Ousey, Sigman, Hunsucker 
and Taber were there. CDRs Owen Englander and F.A.E. Micara were the COs.

NAVAL ATTACHE OFFICE, SANTO DOMINGO, DOMREP. 1964 -1967. CTIC – WO1. INTEL duties. 
Worked for Assistant Naval Attaches, LCDR Norris and LT Carpenter. Selected for WO. 
Popular revolution led by COL Caamano Deno began in April 1965. Military junta deposed 
Donald Reid Cabral and President LBJ sent in the Marines to support the armed forces 
against Caamano Deno and to set the stage for democratic elections.

NAVSECGRU HDQTRS. 1967 – 1969. WO-1 – CWO2. I worked for CAPT G.P. March, G10, as the 
CTR Exam Writer. Authored “Introduction to COMSEC” training publication for 
CAPT J.H.D Williams, ACNSG COMSEC. WO1 Bob Dickey, CTO Exam Writer. 
WO1 Gayle (Hambone) Hamblin, CTT Exam Writer. CTICM Hogan, CTI Exam Writer. 
CTACM Jerry Maravetz, CTA Exam Writer, and WO1 Dan Callahan, CTM Exam Writer. 
USS PUEBLO is captured by North Korea in January, 1968.

NAVFAC DANANG DET DELTA/NAVCOMMSTA CAM RAHN BAY. 1970 - 1971. CWO2 – ENSIGN. 
OIC DET DELTA/COMSEC 705. Relieved CWO2 Joe Henry. NAVFAC CO, was CDR George Jackson. 
CAPT J.H.D. Williams, from ACNSG COMSEC, was assigned as COMNAVFORV N6 in 1971. 
Promoted to LDO Ensign. When DET DELTA was de-established, transferred to 
NCS CAM RAHN BAY to assume responsibility for COMSEC 706. Conducted RPS training 
visits and inspections, COMSEC training and studies, COMSEC collection, and OPSEC studies 
for all Navy, Marine and Advisor organizations from the DMZ to the tip of the Cau Mau Peninsula. 
Shipmates CTRC Denny Polk, CTRC Clark, CTRC Larry Jackson, CTRC Frye.

NSGA HOMESTEAD. 1971 – 1973. ENSIGN – LTJG. P&R/RT DIVO. GYSGT Cronk was DIVChief. 
LT Jim Gourley and I spent the majority of our tour embarked in the six DESRON 18 ships, 
three DD’s out of Mayport, Florida and three DERs out of Key West, chasing Soviet ships in 
the Gulf of Mexico and around Cuba. Navy Captain Leslie Knapp Fenlon Jr. was the 
DESRON 18 Commodore. A super boss! Homestead CO’s were Captains Carl Smith, Nelson Craw and 
Daniel Capozzalo. XOs were CDRs Graham and McCabe. OPSOs were LCDRs Fink, Jacobi and Liable. 
CWO Dev Riddlebarger was the COMO. LTs Roger Brewer and Joe Hoover were also DIVOs. 
Major Tom Farley was Letter Company CO.

NAVSECGRUDET KEY WEST/PROJECT TAVERN. 1973-1977. LTJG – LT. OIC NSGDET/OIC PROJECT TAVERN. 
The DET was tasked to man VQ-2 EC-121, EA-3B and EP-3 aircraft that rotated from Rota, Spain 
for INTEL missions around Cuba. When, in 1974, VQ-2 began devoting all their assets to the MED 
and stopped rotating to Key West, the DET, in partnership with FT Meade, replicated the DET’s 
airborne mission from a 70ft pole at the NAVCOMMUNIT Receiver Site. Because of this success, 
the CO, NAVSTAKWEST provided access to an unused 300 FT MICROWAVE tower at the Naval Station 
that allowed the DET to exceed their mission capability on the aircraft. CNSG named the effort 
Project Tavern, and by 1977, when I left, plans to re-establish NSGA KWEST at the old Sonar School 
and to move the tower there were underway. Chief Everett Driscoll, a RULING/SPANLING, was my AOIC.

NSGA GALETA ISLAND. 1977 – 1979. LT – LCDR. XO during the Carter – Torrijos Panama Canal Treaty 
negotiations. As a result of the Treaty, the footprint of the NSGA was reduced from 2300 to 500 Acres. 
With help from Defense Mapping Agency established new station border. Constructed new guard post.
CO’s were CDRs Ed Dittmer and Norm Liable.

NAVSECGRUDET PYONG TAEK. 1979 – 1980. LCDR. OIC. The DET was a tenant of the Army Field Station 
on Camp Humphries. The CO was CAPT Jim McFarland at NSGA Misawa. In addition to Navy Field Station 
operations, we provided Linguist services and support to Army Air INTEL, Air Force Air INTEL out 
of OSAN AB, and to VQ-1 aircraft deploying from OSAN. President Park Chung-hee was assassinated 
in October, 1979. CWO Paul Moore was my AOIC and coach of our basketball team that, as the 
COMNAVFORKOR All Stars, defeated all the Navy Teams that participated in the Western Regional 
Basketball Tournament at Atsugi, Japan.

CINCPACFLT. 1980 -1983. LCDR. HFDF, CLASSIC WIZARD, TGU and PACFLT SIGINT SITES Branch Head. 
Reclassified from Limited Duty Officer (LDO) (6440) to the Restricted Line (1610). 
CAPTs/Admirals McDowell and Clark were the N8s. CDRs Morris, LaPierre, Goldman, and Campbell 
were senior staff, LCDRs Glenn, Smith, Brinkmann, Kuehne, Ditewig, Dave Dillon and Rucker were also on staff.

COMUSNAVCENT established from CPF Staff (Admiral Arthur) in 1983 that began years-long AOR 
and 5th fleet re-establishment.

NSGA SINOP. 1983 -1984. LCDR – CDR. CO. NSGA was a tenant of the Army Field Station.

CHNAVPERS. 1984 – 1986. CDR. Head NMPC-406E/NMPC-408. Detailer for all CT Ratings. 
Request to separate from NMPC 406 and establish NMPC-408 as sole CT detailing office due to 
unique CT duty rotation was approved. Incorporated Intelligence Specialist detailers into NMPC-408.

NAVCOMSTA SAN DIEGO. 1986 – 1988. CDR. OIC NRRF Imperial Beach. Relieved CDR Hardcastle-Taylor. 
CO was CAPT Fred Kline. My AOICs were LCDRs Mike Morneau and Mike Davis. LTs Kevin Quinn and Scotty Hendron 
were DIVOs. CWO Ernie Elkins and CTACS DiMartino ran the ADMIN Shop. Developed and executed the 
successful PL-1 (Paint Locker -1) operation against Soviet AGI in the Hawaii AOR.

NSGA NAPLES. 1988 – 1990. CDR – CAPT. CO. Doug Gangler and Rich McNamara were my XOs. 
Admirals Frank Gallo and Peter Cressy (COMFAIRMED) and Admiral Hank Chiles (COMSUBGRU8) were my bosses 
upstairs at the Naval Support Activity, Agnano. Berlin Wall falls. Desert Storm began as operation 
to respond to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait.

NAVSECGRU HDQTRS. 1990 – 1992. CAPT. IG. Conducted Inspections and Investigation at stations and staffs 
of the worldwide SECGRU Command. Admiral Ike Cole was COMNAVSECGRU. CAPT Tally Malloy was the Deputy. 
Mikhail Gorbachev resigns as President of the Soviet Union, USSR Collapses, and Boris Yeltsin becomes 
President of the new Russian State in December 1991.

NSA. 1992 – 1995. CAPT. Head Maritime Forces Division, A-24. Admiral Mike McConnell, who, as a CAPT, 
had been A-24, was the DIRNSA, and Admiral Ike Cole was DIRPLANS&POLICY. End of the Cold War/Dawn of 
Cyber Space resulted in complex changes to organization, vision, mission, strategy and budgets. Retired in SEPT 1995.

SPAWAR. 1995 – 2014. Worked as a civilian contractor and Civil Servant at SPAWAR Crystal City and later, 
San Diego. Retired again to the High Desert in Yucca Valley, CA in 2015.
