When, in 1974, VQ-2 began devoting all their assets to the MED and stopped rotating to Key West, the DET, in partnership with FT Meade, replicated the DET’s airborne mission from a 70ft pole at the NAVCOMMUNIT Receiver Site. Because of this success, the CO, NAVSTAKWEST provided access to an unused 300 FT MICROWAVE tower at the Naval Station that allowed the DET to exceed their mission capability on the aircraft.
