Both my brothers had served in the Navy and my oldest brother was heading to RVN. Once I got to NAVCOMSTAPHIL in Feb. of 1967, it seemed forever, but I did finally get picked to prepare for Det B. A Marine Sgt. Wright trained me back at San Miguel. The night of the rocket attack, Sgt. Wright and I were at Clark waiting to leave and were told we would not be going since the barracks were leveled. We waited about two weeks and finally got to leave the PI and flew to DaNang. Det B was staying at Tien Sha (sorry, not sure of the spelling anymore). Eventually we got back to the air base. It is so good to see some of the old names on your E-mails. I guess the most special is John Potts. I never think about the Pueblo without thinking of the downing of his plane. I was quite inexperienced when I got to DaNang. John called me "boot" the whole time. I also remember Chief Batchelor and LCdr. Strobel. Frenchy Poier also brings a great remembrance. Seemed he always had the keys to a truck that didn't belong to our Det. My brother was stationed at the White Elephant in DaNang, so I got to see him occassionally. My worst mistake was going back to the PI to attend SERE school. For some reason once I didn't extend in DaNang and got back to San Miguel a new policy came out that only E-4 and above could go to SERE school. Mr. Strobel happened to back in the PI at the time and he tried to speak up for me, but it didn't do any good. The closest I ever got to Det B again were TAD's on the USS Halsey twice and USS Horne on South SAR. Quite rewarding, but it wasn't the same. I often think of the 59,000 who didn't come back and wonder why we were the ones who did. It may be my own philosophy, but I believe what they did and we did was only part of what helped to bring the Wall down and to see the Soviet influence bankrupt and slip into the trash heap of history. I must believe they did not die in vain. God bless all my brothers from the PI and Det B. With John Lippke, I remember Frank ("Daddy Wags") Wagner, John ("Plotter") Potts [a joy over his remembrance and a sadness over his end], "Frenchy" Poirier, Keith Olson, and Neil Shoenwater. Two things I remember about Frank Wagner: 1) I think it was Neil Shoenwater who helped me cover for Wagner's having substantially destroyed a very detailed chart in a boozed-up, frustrated rage [and we nearly lost our cans over it]; and 2) failing to take a bet from Wagner on the Texas A&M-Alabama game at the Cotton Bowl in '68 (woulda-shoulda-coulda won $50). I also remember great chow at the 3rd MAW chow hall (real eggs!!!). And I remember the 1967 Bob Hope Christmas Show [first in-country that year] and how we had all just received a 5cc. gamma globulin injection because someone in the outfit had come down with hepatitis just days before [and we had to sit on rocks on Hill 527 above the PX for the Christmas Show]. I remember the cold chills I got watching Puff the Magic Dragon working around midnight about that same time. I remember when we were rocketed (the 122s, not the 140s of July 67) [and the second explosion was my...]! I have an image of a Vietnamese girl in a Catholic orphanage we used to visit outside Danang: this little girl had the biggest smile I ever saw and the sunniest personality of any of the orphans there. I was glad to have left Danang the day before the Tet offensive began, but disappointed that I was transferred from USNAVCOMMSTAPHIL before I could return on my next rotation in-country. (My spouse nearly killed me years later when she learned I had volunteered in the first place!) And I still have the b&w pictures of my spouse and infant daughter [now 34!] in the same plastic cover I wrapped them in...and neither the pictures nor the Scotch "Magic" Tape sealing the plastic are faded. John Potts, best Korling in Navy bar-none, who we lost on PR21, was my mentor. Who was the Marine SSgt doing A-branch duties there in late '68? He had been Korling and we hooked up after Pueblo capture on the USS Chicago in Sea of Japan. Det Bravo names I recall and would like to say "Hi" to: Sgt. John Boyuka, Tom Weston, "Frenchy" Poirier, George Berquist, Martin Todorovich, Jeff Welsh, Keith Olson, Frank Wagner, Neil Shoenwater and Wayne Care (author of "Vietnam Spook Show"). What a difference 6 months made: first tour it was cold water showers, a 2-holer outhouse, ate at the Marine chow hall, slop-shute bar in the barracks. Came back 2nd time to new Navy chow hall, Navy EM club, Head with HOT water and real toilets. Still preferred going over to the Air Force side to their EM club. Email Address: aec1292@gmail.com City_State_Country: Tucker, GA (USA) Highlights of your tour/Comments: Arrived at Danang shortly after the Tet Offensive started earlier that week. I was there for administrative support, but was able to volunteer as a crewmember on the ECM-121's on quite a few flights. I remember that our barracks and office was right next to the big ammo dump at Danang, and that we received incoming VC rockets nearly every week while I was there. In one of those rocket attacks, my shoulder was hit from behind with something as I was running towards one of the bunkers. It turned out to be a pretty good nick/scratch on my back. I guess it was a piece of metal from one of those VC rockets. My CO at that time wanted to put me in for a Purple Heart, but I wouldn't have anything to do with that... When my TAD tour was up, I went back to San Miguel, PI and took some leave to go up to Baguio. There I met an American girl and her family. They invited me to stay with them in Manila when I was in town. Well, to make a long story short, the father of that American Girl was the Naval Attache to the American Embassy in Manila. I don't remember his name, but the following months proved to be very interesting. Especially when my CO discovered who I was visiting on the weekends without his knowledge or permission - he went ballastic and got into trouble after the family found out that I had been ordered to stay away. I think he was called onto the carpet by the embassy personnel, and I was invited down there even more frequently. Some of the more interesting highlights that I remember were: attending embassy functions, meeting Imalia and President Marcos at the Presidential Palace, the Taal volcano, the heat, and all that damn rain we got during the two monsoon seasons during my tour there. It's something that you'll never forget as long as you live....
