Our dog (Pete) was fabulous. I knew Jake Blank very well as he originated from my hometown in Gwinn, MI.,Jake lost all of his belongings when the Tidal Wave wiped out everything. What an experience and I would like to hear from anyone who served with me during the period Feb 64 to Feb 65. THANKS VM... 6/24/2014 1.FullName: ERICKSON. The barracks shook so hard that shipmates were jumping out of the windows to avoid getting smashed by furniture etc. This Earthquake was rated as about 9.2 on the Richter scale. The road from Cape Chiniak to Kodiak was closed for several months so we had to boats to get supplies. The Tidal Wave actually wiped out much of the road following the Earthquake. My best buddies during my tour was: Oake Bauman, Jim Ritzer, Ken Pearson, Ed Laggenbauer, John Fedince, also: Johnson, Bentley, Campbell. I was a horrible BARBER for 4 months and I didn't get any tips. Thursday 08/11/2011 6:14:33pm Nickname: Bob Full Name: Robert A. Walking around and exploring the surrounding areas. Food anytime you wanted to eat. A great bunch of guys there when I was there. Oh, and maybe the most memorable highlight of all was hitting Chief Heinig smack in the kisser with a hard snowball one time out on the frozen lake. Well, actually I didn't mean to hit him that high up. All in all, I wouldn't trade the experience of being on The Cape for anything. But I didn't volunteer to stay another year. I look back on it with wonderful memories. Worked both at end of hall past pool table and down in the valley at the shack. Spent much to much time in the bar looking at the Playboy pictures which covered the wall. Had to build that damn cabin and never got to use it. OIC as I recall was Lt Luden. Spelling may be off. Great guy. One of the high points was the Christmas UFO show of '61. They spent the night. Only name I can remember was a guy by name of "Gonzales Gonzales". Saw him in several bit parts later in the movies. I heard later that the young dark haired lady was kicked off tour for hooking. May or May not have been true. I went back to Alaska (Anchorage) in 1969 and met my wife there. Left in spring of '70 and have never been back which I regret. Always ment to go to Kodiak when there, but never made it. Love to hear from any one there when I was. Jack Wednesday 06/26/2002 7:47:35pm Nickname: Full Name: W. T. My boss, the District Intelligence Officer, was a "four striper." Cape Chiniak was planned to be used by our intelligence group in case of certain "contingencies." My boss was assigned a Pontiac staff car. While driving "the boss" out to Cape Chiniak during a "drill," I ran the car off the road and into a snow covered ditch, causing us both to be late for the "drill." The best I can remember, CWO "Buck' Skarda was the CO at the Chiniak station (after this length of time my memory is a bit lacking.) In any event, I was not NSG/CT, but remember the "generator shack" and parts of the interior of the Chiniak station well. Sunday 04/07/2002 6:11:56pm Nickname: Bob Full Name: Robert C. Still remember a wisp of smoke rising from the crash site. The first trip out to The Cape was one I'm sure most of us remembered, especially those who arrived when the road was icy. Spent many hours hiking the area during the summer months which included exploring the many WWII bunkers, etc. Have many fond memories of the 11 months spent there even though we often found ourselves 'counting down the days' til we left. Still have quite a few pictures. Chief Stienmetz was my watch section chief for most of my tour at The Cape. Curt Wilkens was another in our section for most of my tour. I somehow became the barber by default after having been there several months. Would like to return to Kodiak and The Cape someday, knowing full well, that after 40 years, things would look quite different. The cabin, which was almost new in '63 is now a dilapidated, rotting shell according to pictures I have seen and there is nothing left of the barracks and operatons building either. Only the foundation of the DF shack remains. Would like to hear from any of the guys who were there in '63. Sunday 04/07/2002 11:31:48am Nickname: Chuck Full Name: Charles C. First time they had CPO exams in fall in 1964 I flew to Chiniak in chopper because road to Chiniak disappeared with the 1964 earthquake and subsequent tidal wave. Made CTOC as result of that trip. Loved Kodiak Island. Went on to CTOCS first time up and CTOCM first time up, passing up some of the guys who made CPO before I did who seemed to gloat because they had made it and I did not. Lesson I learned from that was to be a human being first, since the status was a responsibility to be aware of what was needed in our Navy and if able, to get it done, not to simply wear the star or stars and glory in it. I thoroughly enjoyed the many photographs of the Cape Chiniak area! Sunday 04/07/2002 11:09:28am Nickname: Bill Full Name: William G. It was a blessing as most went to Adak, which I viewed as the end of the world at that time. My memories are of the good people I served with and the family we became. Waiting for air transport from the Naval station was delayed as winter storm with 100 mph winds across the runway. We all sacked out and then got orders around 01:00 to roll out, take off was going to be made after all. Arrived safely in Seattle in dark and fog of early morning. Our CO was a ham and his antenna's were superior to the station's. I would sneak down on the night watch and string a wire from his equipment and hook it up in the radio room for improved reception. Never got caught. Wednesday 03/06/2002 3:16:07pm Nickname: Bob Full Name: Robert F.
